Introduction: My Journey Toward Starting an Art Therapy Clinic

In school, I wanted to study art because it had always been such a positive outlet for me growing up and into my adulthood. It was a place for me to express myself, build my identity and find comfort. In school, I also enjoyed studying about people. I wanted to find a way to help others. I knew that other people could benefit from art making like I had. Combining my two passions was wonderful, but as I begin graduate study and employment I began to understand that this was a much needed source of therapy.

Understanding the Need: Why Art Therapy Matters

  • Witnessing firsthand the struggles clients face with traditional therapy.

  • The gap in accessible, creative therapeutic options for many individuals.

  • How art therapy provides a unique, non-verbal way to process emotions.

The Vision Behind the Clinic

  • Creating a safe, welcoming space where clients feel free to express themselves visually.

  • Combining professional therapy with the healing potential of artistic creation.

  • Designing programs tailored to diverse needs and backgrounds.

Challenges We Faced While Establishing the Clinic

We continue our advocacy efforts to gain insurance coverage for our clients. To date, we have been able to get on panel of 4 companies! But this is an ongoing effort in Albany and getting Medicaid to sign our services into their Budget. We want to reach the widest range of people and income levels. But this is dependent on clients coverage, while we also keep our doors open.

What We Achieved Through Opening the Clinic

I began a private practice in 2016, part time, one client at a time. Referrals began to flow in from parents seeking support for their children and their families. In 2021 we became a full time practice needing to hire more art therapists to meet the needs of the community. We expanded into neighboring New Jersey and began hiring art therapists working towards their licenses. These clinicians have the same vision and training as we do. They seek out our practice for it's educational support from our Supervisors. We are training the next generation of art therapists to continue to help the members of the community seeking mental health that is traditional treatment with a creative journey that helps to integrate new skills into the lives of others, young and old.

The Impact on Our Clients

  • Seeing clients gain confidence and clarity through creative sessions.

  • Stories of breakthrough moments facilitated by art therapy techniques.

  • Increasing client engagement and satisfaction compared to previous therapy experiences.

Why This Matters to You

  • How art therapy can be an alternative or complement to traditional therapy methods.

  • The importance of finding a therapeutic approach that feels right for you personally.

  • Encouragement to explore creative outlets for mental health healing.
